Matariki 2019: Our stories of beginnings and journeys in Aotearoa
On 25 June 2019, as one whanau, the children, staff and our families from BestStart Regent Kindy gathered for our Matariki Celebration. Himene’s whanau welcomed everyone with a song number.
The children then showcased their song numbers that included Tutira Mai Nga Iwi, a poi dance number E Rere Taku Poi and Twinkle Twinkle Songs in English, Te Reo Maori, Chinese, Filipino and Matariki Stars. The different Twinkle Twinkle Songs depict the different places where our children and families came from.
Our families also shared their stories on how their journeys started here in Aotearoa. It was a special moment to commemorate the journeys that we had since Matariki is the Maori New Yew Year and a new beginning for everyone.
We also took this opportunity to send off our dear manager May who is off to new adventures. Our families gave her a pounamou blessed by kaumatua, and a very heartfelt message given by Danica in behalf of the staff and families.
We then shared our hearty kai, with our warm boil up prepared by children, fry bread and yummy spread from the shared plate from our whanau,
Our Matariki Celebration proved once again the strong whanaungatanga and aroha that we have within our centre community. We thank everyone for joining us in this wonderful celebration. Cheers to new beginnings and wonderful journeys in Aotearoa.
Matariki hunga, Matariki ahunga nui. Matariki has many admirers, Matariki brings us together.
