Matariki at BestStart Marshland Road
Matariki is a time to gather together and to welcome in the Māori new year!
Here at BestStart Marshalnd Road we have an annual Matariki celebration. This year we had our celebration on the 25th June and we invited our parents to join us for our whanau evening.
In the lead up to our annual Matariki celebrations the team all spent the last few weeks teaching the nga tamariki about the importance of Matariki and created door displays and wall displays that shows this learning happening.
This year for our celebrations the Pēpē, Teina and the Tuakana rooms provided a range of activities for the nga tamariki to engage in. The team organised making star necklaces, decorating biscuits, exploring glow in the dark water and ephemeral start art using loose parts. It was fantastic seeing the nga tamariki engage in these experiences and their excitement while their parents watched the learning happening.
As well as providing activities for the nga tamariki to engage in we asked our whānau to bring a plate of kai to share amongst everyone and we sat down together to have kai we finished doing our activities. This was a fantastic opportunity for our whānau to meet each other outside of pick up and drop off times.
