This month we have welcomed Matariki, the Māori New Year. Children have been singing and dancing to waiata such as Paki Paki and Mahunga pakihiwi. Children also took part in creative activities such as making stars, poi, piupiu, and weaving. We also focussed on gardening and doing some planting.

Whanaungatanga is truly evident this time, as our families were welcomed and encouraged to participate in celebration. The children and staff cooked up a feast of roast chicken and vegetables and traditional Māori bread. Children entertained the parents by performing the poi dance ‘Erere taku poi’ and ‘Tutira mai nga iwi’ and enjoyed the feast with them.

The whole celebration of Matariki provides us with many opportunities to learn about the Māori culture.
