This year at BestStart Ferry Road we celebrated our first event since we opened couple months ago.

Matariki is a celebration that has been connecting people across Aotearoa and the Pacific for an era. Here in Aotearoa, for Māori, the rising of the Matariki in Mid-winter marks the Māori new year or Te Mātahi o te Tau.

We observe the brightness of the starts to predict how the year ahead would be. It is also a way to honour the dead, celebrate the dead and plan the future. In the pacific, it was an important navigational help for kaiwhakatere waka (navigators) and an indication of how the weather would be for the travel ahead.

To honor the event, we celebrated by inviting all the tamariki with their families for a Matariki celebration. It was a fun evening with lots of music performed by our lovely tamariki and delicious shared kai.
