As part of our Matariki celebrations the tamariki in the Nursery made some Hua Whenua (vegetable soup) and bread. This was a wonderful way to celebrate Matariki together as it is a time for friends, family and whanau to come together and share kai. This experience links to the kaupapa principle of whanaungatanga, working together in a group experience to make the soup. This began with asking whanau to bring in a small piece of vegetable for our soup. We were thrilled to see such amazing support from the families in our nursery.

Harry brought in a kumara; his mum told us the story that they had gone out that night to get it. Harry told his kaiako (teachers) that he carried it to the checkout lady at countdown. This was a wonderful opportunity for the tamariki to be involved in the experience from beginning to end.
