This week we had a “Matching-up feelings” game with a focus on our classroom theme, which is social competence. Tamariki experienced a lot of fun throughout this whole experience. As we sat down together, the kaiako placed the cards on the table with the pictures showing.

The kaiako, Maryanne, helped tamariki by naming each of the feelings they found, which they were able to clearly repeat back to us. Tamariki showed such interest and involvement by immersing themselves completely into the game.

The Feeling Matching-up game is supporting tamariki to use matching skills to tell whether two cards are the same or different. It also a fantastic activity to help our tamariki to understand their emotions and how to describe their own feelings.

Matching skills are involved in visual discrimination. Learning to match feelings helps our children as they recognize letters and then words. All of which are important for their pre-reading skills. Mīharo!/ awesome, everyone!
