The Pounamu room is always filled with laugher and excitement. Lately our focus has been around messy play and playdough. Together the teachers have worked around making sure that the children are gaining the best knowledge and development through these interests. We have made some amazing moon sand with lots of shiny glitter and play dough with paint. Our children love being able to explore their world through their hands, so we provide opportunities for them to do so and we carry them outside as well. We don’t confine messy play to one area as children are actively exploring constantly. The teachers are always along side the children learning developing and getting messy with them.

Te Whāriki states that being able to explore through messy play supports learning across all strands of Te Whariki. The Communication strand can be highlighted in the way that children are able to discover and develop different ways to be create and expressive through messy play while also supporting the Exploration stand where children are given the opportunity to gain confidence in and control their own bodies while actively exploring with all senses. The use of tools, materials and equipment widen their development to the outside worlds where these tools can be used in every day life at school and at home.
