Our Matariki Whānau Evening is one of the really special nights of the year at BestStart Buchanans Road. Our kaiako and tamariki have been building up to this event over the last few weeks. We have been talking about the different stars and what they represent. From exploring what fish are in our local rivers and trying to make them out of uku / clay (relating to waitī star) to creating our own beautiful collage stars in the Nursery, to making wishes (relating to Hiwa-i-te-rangi star). We have read books, been dramatic with acting out the story of the Seven Kites of Matariki and so much more, before all coming together to celebrate Matariki with all our whānau.

For our special evening our Prep Room tamariki performed their play of The Seven Kites of Matariki before all our centre tamariki came together to sing some special songs. After karakia to bless our kai we enjoyed some delicious soup and homemade bread with our families, enjoying the opportunity to talk and connect with them. One of the most special parts of this evening is seeing the older siblings who used to attend our centre coming back to celebrate with us and watch them reminisce about all the things they remember from when they came to our centre.
