The Nursery enjoy going on regular excursions, getting out and about in the community, making connections. We value the strong connections with the community and maintain these, to create links with the wider world and the knowledge it has to share with us. To support our group interest in early literacy we planned an excursion to Music and Movement at St Peters church.  We enjoyed the short walk to the church as we observed and talked about the surroundings. When we arrived there was a lot of other adults and children there. We sat down alongside them as we explained to our tamariki what we were going to do there, giving them reassurance and allowing them to understand what was going to happen next. This along with our strong relationships with the tamariki allowed them to feel comfortable and safe in the new environment. At first we began to observe and then joined in with the singing and actions. It didn’t take long before the tamariki felt comfortable to move around the room as they began dancing and joining in with the other children. We enjoyed using the egg shakers, playing parachute games, dancing around and watched Charlotte the Music and Movement teacher lead the session.

After the Music and Movement session,  we stayed for morning tea and the playgroup. Charlotte welcomed us to the group and had a nice chat with us which helped to make these valuable connections even further. The tamariki enjoyed exploring all of the resources on offer, the playdough, pretend play kitchen, balls and the musical toys were favourites. After lots of exploring and interacting with the other adults and children we made our way back to preschool in the pram. It was awesome to see the children's confidence grow to join in, interact and explore with and alongside others throughout this experience. What a great time we all had out in the community experiencing something different and fun for everyone as we shared in the musical knowledge and skills of others in our community.
