This month for the BestStart Inglewood knowledge box we were pleased to learn about hairdressing from Teena of Curls hairdressers.

Teena gave us a box of equipment that she uses on a daily basis at her hair salon and the first thing we did here in centre was have a special mat time to take a peek inside the box.  There were lots of interesting things, some we already knew the names of and how to use this such as a brush and a comb, but there were lots of other things that we had to have a big think about.

We also had a think about some questions we wanted to find the answers to and then a few days later, Teena was able to come into the centre and work with the tamariki, showing them what everything was and how to use them.  We learnt about the funny looking hair clips and how Teena could use them to hold up sections of hair while we worked on other sections.  There was also a brush that the children thought was for painting and they were right with their guess.  Some of the boys thought it was funny that you could paint hair, but a couple of the girls let us know that the hairdressers did this to their Mummy’s hair.

Teena then decorated the tamariki’s hair with hair chalk and showed them how to use straighteners, the brushes and the different combs.  We were also fortunate that one of our parents Monique, donated a bags of hair clips, headbands, hair ties and hairclips, which the tamariki loved using on themselves and each other.

Our early childhood curriculum Te Whariki acknowledges the importance of bring the community into the centre as ‘children learn and develop best when their culture, knowledge and community are affirmed and when the people in their lives make connections across settings, so for us its really important that the tamariki here at BestStart are living our vision of “nurturing our neighbour” and leaning about what it takes to be part of a community.

Teena, thanks very much for supporting our tamariki’s learning about hairdressing through our knowledge box.  The tamariki really enjoyed finding out lots of new information and they enjoyed playing hairdressers in the centre for the rest of the month.  They are also excited to walk past your salon when we visit the library or other businesses in our community.
