Nurturing the learning that matters
This month children enjoyed exploring the Alphabet Soup game. Each child chose the can which had the first letter of their name in which they added pictures of different objects to make a soup in the can. For the older children the challenge was to put the letters corresponding to the letters on the can. A great literacy experience in developing their awareness of print and pre reading skills in a fun way.
We also got a visit from the Grey Lynn Fire Service, who came to give us a little insight into the role of a firefighter.
We saw the Fire truck arrive and called out to our little friends “there is a surprise here, come and see.” At first we could only see the tip of the fire truck poking above a van parked next door to us and then suddenly in came the firefighters.
They taught us about what to do if there is a fire 1. Call out fire 2. Move outside of the building and 3. Call 111 which reminded us the importance of teaching children their address. We also discussed fire alarms and safety around matches and lighters, explaining that they are tools, not toys.
Next we watched a firefighter dress up in his gear, there were some funny noises coming from the mask and gadgets attached which was curious and led to some questions from tamariki. Finally, we had the opportunity to go outside and see the truck and even get inside! What a great learning we all had this morning!
