In the month of August our children’s interest in transport were further enhanced through inviting the local Police Officer Marina to provide children with an opportunity to explore the Police car. Our children were very excited and actively listening to Officer Marina as she instructed about how they use the special radio to communicate to other officers and ask for backups.

Children developed their confidence while speaking through the radio and listening to their own voice. Children were also fascinated to explore the police car siren. They pressed different buttons on the system to listen to the sounds of the siren that went from low pitch to high pitch. They explained that the siren is too loud and some covered their ears too. It was great to have feedbacks from the parents as they explained how their child came home very excited to share the experience about sitting in the Police car.

Children were also recognising and discussing about the design of the Police car. They identified the seats on the Police car are like the ones they have in “their mum’s and dad’s car”. They also noticed four wheels that makes the car move and has yellow and blue strips on both sides of the car.

According to Te Whariki, “ Children will be supported in an ability to connect their learning in the ECE setting with experiences in a familiar local communities and learn the important role they play towards helping the people to feel safe and happy and thus feel a sense of themselves as global citizens.  Later in the mid of August the whole Auckland went into lockdown level 4 and we continued children’s learning through Beststart@home online learning and Zoom meetings.

We also supported children with their individual interests through posting daily stories and planned experiences on storypark posts which enhanced children to explore different learning areas though virtual learning and development. We will continue to support our parents/whanau and community throughout this journey to feel safe and connected in their bubbles from home.
