Here at BestStart Wales Street our centre encourages tuakana/teina interactions. We always show aroha towards each other, as these are part of our centre values, making sure we acknowledge when our older tamariki support our younger tamariki. Supporting beautiful ako between all our age groups.

Interactions like these are observed daily as kaiako encourage and role model how to have kind and respectful interactions daily, and use social and emotional coaching to support bonding, resilience and foster a real community of learners.

Tuakana/teina refers to the relationship between an older (tuakana) person and a younger (teina) person and is specific to teaching and learning in the Māori context. Within teaching and learning contexts, this can take a variety of forms: Peer to peer – teina teaches teinatuakana teaches tuakana.
