Our butterfly journey
The senior tamariki have been lucky enough to watch the process of caterpillars turning into monarch butterflies and the amazing journey in between. With the swan plants inside the classroom not a day went by without a senior child noticed the transformations taking place. The children watched the caterpillars grow bigger and bigger until it got into the J shape, the children then knew at this stage it was about to form its chrysalis. A few days went on as the chrysalis got darker and darker and then the chrysalis began to turn transparent and the children could see the butterfly’s wings. From this point on the children knew the transformation to a butterfly would be close, so there was always a child waiting and watching to tell everyone else when the process began! The children were amazing when we finally were able to watch up close the chrysalis turn into a beautiful butterfly. We decided once the butterfly was ready to release it outside to our playground and the teachers helped with this and we set the butterfly free.
The butterfly didn’t want to leave the company of the amazing children watching on, so stuck around for the children to have turns holding the butterfly and observing the butterfly get ready to leave for its journey. What an amazing process for the children to be able to watch and learn first hand about the transformation!
