At BestStart South Rd we've been thinking about how to bring nature into our centre as much as possible. Previously our 'Birthday Wall' had a pretty awesome Hungry Caterpillar theme that hung from the ceiling, but it was not something that our tamariki could really take ownership of, or interact with. We decided to start a living birthday wall.  After a very generous donation of a range of succulents from a friend in the community we started our new project. (Thank you to Donna Sayers from Stratford - very kind of you).

Everyone got to choose the plant they liked and potted up their very own pot. One of our creative kaiako prepared a very special tag made from the branch of a tree, so we could add their name/birthdate and month to the pot. With the help of our very own Bob the Builder (Kaiako Diane) nga tamariki created a special birthday shelf (made out of a pallet) to keep all our plants together.

Of course our plants need watering and nurturing, so everyone is able to feel a sense of ownership for their plant as they tend to it.

On Graduation Day at their special Graduation mat time it is a wonderful life long keep sake the children get to take home with them.

We just love our new Birthday Wall and the comments from whanau and visitors have been amazing.
