Our nursery in action
At BestStart Te Whāriki, we believe that our tamariki (infants and toddlers) learn through respectful, trustful, responsive and reciprocal relationships with familiar adults in a peaceful and unhurried environment. Teachers work in close partnership with parents and whanau to follow the child’s routine from home with sleep times, mealtimes and so on, to support smooth transition of infants and toddlers into our nursery room.
We are providing meaningful, rich and rewarding learning opportunities such as real practical life activities (pouring, and transferring items using different materials; water play, playdough, art experiences, sandpit play, messy play, care of environment and so much more) that develop and refine children’s working theories, problem solving; will increase their independence, confidence, concentration, sensory development; will help to strengthen large muscles and fine motor skills and develop their verbal and non-verbal communication skills to form new neural pathways that are the foundations for all future learning.
Our fun loving, challenging, flexible and child-centred daily programme for our mixed age group in our nursery room will continually facilitate tuakna-teina relationships (older child supports the learning of younger child).Whenever we have group times, we make sure that the toddlers interact gently with babies. This helps infants and toddlers to understand about people around themselves.
We are passionate about developing our youngest to develop love and appreciation of books. The act of engaging with books will encourage them to continue to discover and explore their own world, which is how most of the children learn. Reading books to our children is a huge part of our daily routine to develop early literacy and language skills and our children's love and appreciation of books.
