Here are a couple of moments taken from our Raranga (flax weaving) evening at BestStart Hokowhitu facilitated by our knowledgeable and talented kaiako, Maree Harvey. Maree holds a diploma in Maori arts, and the work you can see in the pictures is her work. She had set up the environment in a thoughtful and inviting way, and it made us very enthusiastic about our learning.

There is a lot of history and tikanga to this art and it was fascinating to hear about this as we discovered that making our own kono (basket) was indeed tougher than it looks! This evening was also opened up to whanau, and it was great to see so much interest and involvement.

What amazing talent and skill we have among us! Thank you Maree for sharing your passion with us, your love for raranga really shows.
