What learning takes place when children go on excursions?

Excursions are great for connecting with the wider world. Children step out of the centre with their peers and teachers and are excited to be going for a walk or a ride on the bus. They are stimulated with the whole experience and along the journey revisit experiences, experience new things or for some children it is their very first experience and will leave a lasting memory.

The visit to the Turanga/Library was very special. It was planned along side the Matariki celebration. Children had opportunities to listen to some stories, sing waiata/songs in te reo Maori and English. Children participated in the group activities and puppet story telling. This builds and provides experiences for literacy development, as children listen to stories and sing songs.

Group outings are fun, children enjoy some time away from the centre in an open environment. Children learn to follow and use rules for outings and looking at the safety, when crossing roads, what to do, what to look for when crossing, how to behave and walk safely in an environment where others observe you.

We are very proud of these children, who were so well behaved. They listened to and followed instructions well. Children showed confidence in participating at the story session. Above all, they all enjoyed the trip.
