Friday was an exciting day at BestStart Oamaru Kindy, it was Pajama Day!!! The four year olds were focusing on the letter P in their literacy group times for the week and had an extra special P day planned. Everyone was to wear their pajamas and the four year olds would make everyone pancakes for morning tea; what a perfect plan!!!

Everyone was very excited to show their friends their pajamas and it was soon time to start preparing morning tea. The group took turns adding ingredients then mixing the batter and watched closely for bubbles to appear after the kaiako poured batter into the frying pan. The first batch was soon ready for the younger tamariki who quickly ate them with some delicious fruit, yummy!! The four year olds kindly, and very patiently, waited until everyone else had eaten their kai before sitting down to try their delicious fluffy pancakes.

At BestStart Oamaru Kindy we provide extra support for tamariki’s literacy and numeracy learning with two focused group times for our four year old tamariki each day as part of our Be School Ready programme. These group times support tamariki to develop many skills such as letter and number recognition, fine motor skills, sound recognition, scissor skills, counting, colour and shape recognition and many more. These group times support the literacy and numeracy learning that is happening throughout our programme and allow kaiako to plan for the older tamariki in the centre in a smaller group allowing one on one support to master skill development.
