Recently as part of a 1000s trees scheme through BestStart we were gifted some beautiful rakau for our kindy. We got some bushy natives for our mound, and some lemon trees to put into pots. The tamariki were excited about the new trees for the play area! They were more than happy to give the kaiako some awhi to carry the bushes to the mound, and to help put the roots carefully in the hole and cover them up with soil.

Our mound looks so ataahua/beautiful now with the new trees, and we still have our special lemon trees to plant in some big pots.
The tamariki are learning to take care of the outdoor environment by helping to plant beautiful trees and look after them. We are reminding the children not to pull on the plants or pick the leaves so that we can enjoy them, and let them grow nice and big. The children are practicing kaitiakitanga as they learn these caring skills.
