Practicing our fine motor skills
Here in the Prep Room we have a strong focus on being school ready; through collaboration with our local schools, we focus on multiple areas of learning such as concentration, perseverance, working together, sharing our voice, self-help, curiosity and fine and gross motor skills to name a few. To support tamariki to explore and nurture their fine motor skills we set up intentional activities such as threading, weaving, using scissors, eye droppers, tongs, cotton buds for painting and more.
Through these experiences tamariki are promoted to engage with their fine motor skills and their pincer grip; thumb and index finger, through exposure to using this grip these finger muscles strengthen and over time this grip starts to feel more natural for the child and becomes their dominant grip while engaging in these experiences. By focusing on this grip development this then promotes tamariki to hold and use a pencil with their pincer grip to draw and write with.
