In the nursery the kaiako have noticed incredible growth in the level of communication that our pēpē have developed over their time at home during the level 4 lockdown. Our kaiako have used this as an opportunity to help them grow and develop theses skills. The children have really loved the opportunity to read books and mat time stories with the teachers, while also exploring these during free play.

Opportunities like this encourage pre-reading skills such as how to hold a book, learn new words, develop imagination and interests, and the chance to share experiences with other children and adults.

Reading supports learning across all the strands of Te Whāriki. In particular, children's developing literacy is supported in the Communication strand, which looks at children developing verbal and non-verbal communication skills, experiencing the stories and symbols of their own and other cultures, and finding ways of being creative and expressive.
