At BestStart Abacus we are studying construction and have been working alongside Greening Taupo planting native trees in our garden.

Through this learning the children decided they needed to build a weta hotel. They came up with a plan, made a list of materials and off we went to the local hardware store to collect the materials.

The guys down at Carters Taupo were fantastic and so helpful. They had cut some logs of timber for us, showed the children around the yard and shop, and spoke to the children about where we get our timber from. We then carried the logs back to Abacus and the construction began.

Construction went on for days using the drills, hammers and hand saws until we had created the perfect home for bugs. We love embarking on project-based learning with our tamariki. Project based learning encourages children to become more independent and take on greater responsibility for their learning, the first step to lifelong learning. By enticing them to be excited about furthering their knowledge, it fosters a love of learning so they remain active in seeking new skills and information.
