Today we had our friends from Fulton Hogan join us again, but today to talk to us about road safety for Road Safety Week.

Before they arrived, we spoke to our tamariki about what they were coming to talk to us about this time and asked our tamariki what they thought Fulton Hogan might bring with them. There were some great ideas; Noah thought maybe some “cones”, Maddox thought some “signs”, Maddi thought “pictures” and Shathvik thought they might bring us “ice cream!”

Three stations were set up outside and the first station was a pedestrian crossing. Ryan spoke to us about the rules of crossing the road: Stop, look with our eyes right, left, right again and listen for traffic then WALK across the road when safe to do so. We then practiced walking across the “road” between the cones.

The second station was STOP/GO signs. Our tamariki had great knowledge about what the sign said and Nikau shared “it can say slow too”. Dave spoke to us all about why they use these signs on the road, to stop traffic to make it safe for everyone when there is work happening on the roads. They told tamariki to make sure they tell their parents to stop when they see these signs and to go slow when driving past- so you may hear some instructions coming from the back seat for a while! We then practiced stopping and going with the signs.

The third and final station was the traffic light (I think this was a crowd favourite). Nicole spoke to us all about traffic lights. When asked, Katie shared the red means “stop” and Noah told us the green means “go”. Shathvik reminded everyone the importance of wearing a seat belt in the car. We also learnt that these lights are starting to replace the STOP/GO signs more to keep the people working on the roads safer. Nicole asked for some helpers to jump on the bikes and demonstrate how to stop and go at the lights and some helpers to push the buttons to control the lights and then everyone had a turn to try both.

This was such a wonderful experience today for Road Safety week with lots of fun learning and even more fun putting what we learnt into practice. It was fantastic to hear how much knowledge our tamariki had. Once again, this has been such a great opportunity to connect with our community and we look forward to continuing a great relationship with our neighbours at Fulton Hogan.
