Scaring off Nian!

We are a very multicultural centre and have been lucky enough to have the support of parents and teachers to ensure we are able to celebrate Chinese New Year both correctly and respectfully.

BestStart Maui has been busy celebrating Chinese New Year. A dress-up day in traditional red to scare off Nian (a beast who lives under the sea or in the hills) according to Chinese mythology. The day began with learning to write numbers and words in Chinese, then we moved on to making fresh dumplings with ingredients from our veggie garden for lunch. Next, we did our dragon parade in the dragon the children have been making alongside our teacher Nicholas all week. We made sure we played our instruments extra loud in case Nian was near. The rest of the day was filled with lots of arts and crafts, we made lanterns and firework art to ensure we have a prosperous year and to keep Nian at bay as in the legendary stories, Nian is scared of fire, fireworks, the color red and loud noises.
