Here at BestStart Hei Hei we are lucky to have a close relationship with the primary school next door to us, Hornby Primary School. We take our oldest tamariki on visits to the new entrants class each fortnight on a Thursday morning.

They get to sit at mat time with one of the new entrants teachers, Miss Bailey, who will be their teacher when they make the transition to this school. She will read a book or do an activity on the mat, and then after that has a worksheet or other activity organised at the tables that relate to the book or mat time activity. These table top activities can help to teach our tamariki about writing, colouring, cutting, drawing, counting and patterns.

After this it is time for fruit break, where they are offered fruit supplied by the school, and they get a bit of free play time as well to explore the classroom before it is time to return to preschool.

We find these visits invaluable for our tamariki to gain a sense of belonging at school and a confidence in the bigger school environment, as well as being able to develop a relationship with their teacher and experience some of the activities that primary school children are involved in.
