Signing the Parkside Treaty
To mark Waitangi Day, some enthusiastic Preschool tamariki (children), kaiako (teachers) and parents/whānau signed the Parkside Treaty. At Parkside we endeavour to work in partnership with our children and families. "The treaty is a form of agreement", a learning message we wanted to share with our children and was great to include parents as well. Children were provided with a meaningful learning opportunity to make sense of the Waitangi Day and it's significance.
The Parkside Treaty is displayed in the Preschool Room. This year again we thought we would review it and make it more special by setting up a Treaty Signing Whaare and use our special centre korowai, put on people signing the treaty.
Kaiako Swazi, constructed a whaare with the children, some who watched and listened with great interest. The teachers started the ceremony, as the children watched and willingly joined in. The older children grasped the concept very well. The younger children followed and did their own mark making. It was great to see the children reminding their parents on arrival to sign the treaty. They were using the actual word. It made us so proud to see that our children are learning to work in partnership and making sense of the world they are living in.
