Last week BestStart Opihi's Kiwi group (4 year old children) have been exploring science. On the first day, we looked at 'how flowers drink?' We carefully used the eye droppers to put coloured water in the container, before placing white flowers in. We put the flowers aside to watch what happened. When we came to preschool the next day, our flowers had changed colour!

On the second day we experimented with liquid density. The children put coloured water into a bottle, then we used the droppers to place oil on top. After we carefully placed the oil on top, we discovered that we could drip the coloured water through the oil, and it would stay in droplets.

On the third day we explored magnets. The children all got to choose some magnets, compasses and metals to test. After a short time, the children were able to show each other what they had learnt. They discovered that magnets could pull together or push apart, they will move a compass and which metals they will pick up.

On the fourth day, we explored animals. We worked together as a team to sort the animals into three categories. We decided whether the animals live on land, in water or can live on both. The children had some awesome discussion about each animal.

This week the children have spent time exploring science using different strategies. They have made predictions, used trial and error to learn about magnets and shared knowledge with each other through discussion.
