All children in Tamariki Maia have a shared interest in stories, whether this be listening to their favourite story through CD books, reading physical books or listening and dancing to songs. They also love creating intricate designs out of a variety of resources then sharing their stories about their designs.

Parents have also shared their aspirations based around getting school ready, social confidence and early literacy acquisition. Therefore, our kaiako (teachers) have ensured the current project took these things into consideration and set up a Storytelling learning project. Through Storytelling, our tamariki (children) have continuous access to many resources to help inspire their creativity and imagination. We have seen many intricate designs through Mobilo, Lego and arts and crafts (using the much beloved hot glue gun).

They are then able to share their stories about designs with their kaiako and friends. This helps tamariki develop a sense of empowerment amongst their peers, which develops confidence for speaking in front of others over time. By having access to books, tamariki can memorise and retell known stories. They develop an understanding of the orientation of books and that they are to be read from left to right, as well as the concept of having a beginning, middle and end.
