Our 2 year olds at BestStart Omokoroa have had an interest in insects this term, so we had a look at the butterfly life cycle.

We used dye to make our butterfly wings and tea bags for the chrysalis, the tamariki helped to build the butterfly to display on the wall.  Each child then became a butterfly so they could see themselves.

One of our kaiako (Teacher) brough in a caterpillar for us to watch grow into a beautiful kahuku (monarch butterfly).  The same day we discovered a moth in a cardboard box in the classroom, so this was a great opportunity to see what the difference was between them.  We enjoyed reading the book The very hungry caterpillar by Eric Carle, one of the kaiako has a cardboard caterpillar that we were able to feed as we read the book.

There has been lots of dancing and moving around just like butterflies move their wings, it has been a term of fun and laughter.
