Fantail Room

In the Fantail Room, our pēpi are at the centre of everything we do. Guided by the principles of the BestStart Infant Teaching Resource and Te Whāriki (New Zealand's early childhood curriculum), we create a nurturing environment where relationships, wellbeing, empowerment, holistic development, family partnerships, and cultural responsiveness are woven into everyday practice.

Wellbeing | Te Whare Tapa Whā in Action

Our learning environment supports the wellbeing of each pēpi through the interconnected dimensions of hauora. The warm interactions between our Fantail kaiako and infants during play, care routines, and exploration reflect our commitment to nurturing Taha Tinana (physical wellbeing), Taha Hinengaro (emotional wellbeing), Taha Wairua (spiritual wellbeing), and Taha Whānau (social and family wellbeing).

Through responsive caregiving, calm interactions, and predictable routines, pēpi feel safe, secure, and valued.

Relationships | Building Trust Through Connection

Strong, respectful relationships are at the heart of our philosophy. Our kaiako are present, attentive, and responsive to the cues and interests of each pēpi. These trusting relationships create a secure base from which infants can explore, learn, and develop confidence.

We also value the partnerships we build with whānau, recognising that learning is strengthened when home and centre work together.

Empowerment | Recognising Capable Learners

Every pēpi in the Fantail Room is viewed as a capable and confident learner. Through uninterrupted play experiences and thoughtfully prepared environments, infants are given opportunities to explore at their own pace.

As pēpi independently explore resources, with kaiako observing nearby, we support autonomy while remaining available for guidance and reassurance. Observations inform our planning and help us tailor experiences that respond to individual strengths, interests, and developmental needs.

Through ako, both kaiako and pēpi learn alongside one another in relationships grounded in trust and respect.

Holistic Development | Supporting the Whole Child

We recognise that learning and development are interconnected. Physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual development occur together through play, exploration, and meaningful interactions.

Inspired by Te Whare Tapa Whā, we strive to create balanced experiences that support the whole child and honour each pēpi's unique journey of growth.

Family and Community | Weaving Whānau into Learning

Whānau are an integral part of our learning community. Connections with families and the celebration of shared experiences reflect our commitment to building strong partnerships that support children's learning and wellbeing.

We acknowledge that the knowledge, culture, and aspirations of families enrich our programme and help create a strong sense of belonging for every pēpi.

Respectful Cultural Practices | Nurturing Mana and Mauri

In the Fantail Room, we honour Te Ao Māori perspectives by recognising that every pēpi is born with mana and mauri. Through respectful interactions, the use of te reo Māori, tikanga practices, and meaningful connections to whānau and whenua, we create an environment where infants feel seen, heard, and valued.

The caring relationships evident throughout our daily practice reflect our collective responsibility to nurture each child's identity and sense of belonging, empowering them to grow as confident learners grounded in who they are.

Together, these practices ensure that our Fantail Room is a place where pēpi are cherished, respected, and supported to thrive. By keeping infants at the centre of everything we do, we create a safe, empowering, and culturally responsive environment that lays strong foundations for lifelong learning and wellbeing.
