The importance of midline crossing

At BestStart Montessori Johnsonville we develop the "whole child". This means that we don't just focus on academics, we also develop the social emotional and physical aspects too. These are however all linked. We need to support all aspects to help your child grow into a peaceful, connected global citizen.

I've probably spoken to just about everyone about the importance of exercise. Getting outside is so important so your child can run, jump, climb, balance etc. We do these exercises inside too. We support both physical and core strength.

There is a link between core strength and midline crossing. And midline crossing is essential for academic learning. Take a look at the video link I've posted. It's only a few minutes long but explains why midline crossing is essential for children being able to write and how we can recognize children that need more support in this area. Tied in with midline crossing is children sitting in a W shape with their legs. That's where their legs are not crossed in front of them when they sit, rather each is splayed out to the side, therefore sitting in a W. Children are discouraged from sitting this way at Montessori due to it stopping their midline development.
