The Forest School concept was first developed in Denmark, where tamariki who attended a forest school were found to have developed strong social skills, the ability to work in groups effectively and generally had high self-esteem and confidence in their own capabilities. These attributes proved to be an effective foundation that raised academic achievement and is therefore a great way for us to support a smooth transition into the New Zealand Curriculum and a develop a good continuity of learning for our tamariki.

We decided to start today with a walk in our local area. We found flowers and a river with a waterfall! It was great for our tamariki to be able to run around in the sun taking in all the sights, sounds and smells of nature. Nature play is proven to significantly improve all aspects of child development – physical, mental, social and emotional, including growth of resilience, self-confidence, creativity and more. As you can see from our photos and video our children were definitely developing these skills!

We look forward to continuing and growing this initiative in the coming weeks and months.
