This is the way we cross the road

It was Road Safety Week recently at Montessori Rongotai. We took full advantage of the sunny weather and made sure we went on three identical short walks in our local community. All the children went on the walks and got to cross the road eight times!

At the roads the children all held hands and we talked about what we needed to be doing to make sure it was safe. The children have learned how to Stop, Look and Listen for cars before they cross the road and took an active part in helping to make sure the roads were safe for us to cross.

Our children talked about what they could see and if the cars would be a danger to them when crossing the road. We also noticed cars that turned into the end of the street (far away from us) as we crossed the road. We talked about the car and driver being able to see us, especially with our green vests, and that we would be okay if we crossed the road quickly and sensibly.

The children at Montessori were so good at crossing roads!

In the afternoon we had a special mat time to talk about crossing roads. We shared what we had learned and talked about on our respective walks. As we didn't get to any traffic lights we had a discussion about what we would have done if we had gotten to some. Our children all knew they would need to stop, press the button and wait for the green man.
