What does sound look like? That was one of a few questions we asked the BestStart Leeds Street tamariki on the Art Exploration trip to the Wellington City Gallery, Te Whare Toi in Civic Square.

The title of the installations we visited was Semiconductor: The Technological Sublime.

The experience was loud with a variety of rainbow, earthy mixed colours moving and grooving to the soundtrack of intense music which drove the images to dance on the large walls to its rhythm.

Tamariki voices about what they felt,

Hunter, “The sound was a scary sound”.

Tyla, “It made me happy because it looked like a rainbow”.

Belle, “I felt fantastic”.

Oliver,” I coloured in the screaming, I felt scared in there”.

Skye,” I felt happy, the lights made me feel happy”.

Charlie, “ It made me feel brave because my friends were being brave, I thought I could too”.

Both Sue and I were always with the tamariki and if they felt uncomfortable one of us stood at the entrance, reassuring them and observed the other tamariki interaction with the installation.

Throughout this experience the tamariki discovered that art can be expressed in a range of media and there is no limit to your imagination and different resources that can be used.

The tamariki were supported in their emotions an able to express themselves honestly knowing that they were safe and listened too.

The tamariki later drew their interpretation of what they felt when at the Gallery.
