Over the last few weeks here in PikoPiko (infant room) we have focused on “working together”.  The importance of social skills learning for all children is a vital element of their development.

Just stop and think about all the social interactions adults may have during the day. Adults need to learn to be part of a work group, a sports team, talk to strangers in a shop, interact with neighbours, family, friends and wider family.  Children need to learn how to do this to play their part in society.

In the PikoPiko room teachers are working alongside our children to build the skills and knowledge they need to play with others successfully. How we do this is to model the behaviours we value, like turn taking (your turn, my turn).

Using toys and simple games aimed that this age group allows children to start making those brain connections on how to play with others. Making it simple, fun and something the child can repeat over and over so that understanding starts to happen.

Our curriculum Te Whāriki states: Children learn through responsive and reciprocal relationships with people, places and things.

The importance placed on relationships is evident throughout this curriculum.
