On Tuesday morning, our tamariki enjoyed a special excursion to Relish Cafe, where they had a wonderful opportunity to connect with our local community while practising important life skills. The walk to the café was filled with excitement and conversation as the children made their way through the community together.
Upon arriving at Relish Cafe, we were warmly welcomed to find a table already prepared for our group of 12 tamariki, complete with delicious brownies waiting for them. Once everyone was seated, their fluffy drinks arrived, topped with marshmallows. The children thoroughly enjoyed sipping their fluffies while sharing conversations and laughter with their friends. It was lovely to observe the warm social interactions and strong sense of belonging as they relaxed and enjoyed the café experience together.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ian, the owner of Relish Cafe, who generously provided the brownies and fluffies free of charge for all the children. His kindness helped make the excursion a truly memorable experience for our tamariki.
Prior to the excursion, the children were invited to bring $2 with them. This allowed them to purchase their own shortbread cookie, providing an authentic opportunity to practise important social and mathematical skills. The tamariki confidently approached the counter, placed their orders, handled their money and used polite manners during their interactions with the café staff. These real-life experiences support children's growing independence, confidence and understanding of how to participate positively in their community.
Before leaving the cafe, the children expressed their gratitude in a very special way by singing Te Aroha to thank Ian and the Relish Café team for their generosity and hospitality. It was a beautiful moment that reflected our values of kindness, respect and appreciation for others.
This excursion was a wonderful example of learning beyond the centre walls. Through meaningful community experiences, our tamariki continue to develop confidence, social competence, independence and a strong sense of connection to the world around them.
