BestStart Te Aroha has two new pet chickens!

Our tamariki have loved welcoming them into our centre, and they have already started laying eggs, which has brought so much excitement to our learning community.

Caring for our chickens has quickly become a favourite part of the day. Tamariki have been helping with feeding, collecting the eggs, and making sure our chickens are happy and safe.

These everyday moments give children the opportunity to learn about responsibility, empathy, and the importance of caring for living things. The arrival of our chickens also links closely with our centre’s goal of becoming more sustainable.

By collecting and using fresh eggs, tamariki see firsthand how food can be produced in a natural and sustainable way. This helps to build their understanding of where food comes from and encourages respect for our environment. Most importantly, our new feathered friends have sparked joy, curiosity, and plenty of wonderful conversations.

The children’s excitement when they discover a freshly laid egg is a beautiful reminder of how meaningful hands-on learning can be. We look forward to sharing more of our sustainability journey with you as our chickens continue to be part of our BestStart Te Aroha whānau.
