Our centre was very lucky to be invited to take part in the first-ever Books on Board adventure in New Zealand!

Our day began with a rainy walk to the station, but the sun came out just as our train set off.

On the train to Porirua, our tamariki enjoyed a magical song, dance and storytelling performance of Dazzlehands by the book’s author and illustrator, Sacha Cotter and Josh Morgan. They also shared more catchy songs, keeping our tamariki singing, dancing and engaged throughout the journey.

After arriving at Porirua Station, we walked down to Porirua Library, where the adventure continued with music and movement, kanikani and creative Dazzlehands crafts with Sacha and Josh. Despite the challenging weather, our tamariki had an absolutely wonderful time. Their excitement, curiosity and love for reading, learning and exploring truly shone throughout the day.

Excursions like this provide valuable learning experiences beyond the classroom. Tamariki develop independence, self-regulation and resilience while navigating public transport and adapting to changing weather. Storytelling, singing and movement support early literacy and oral language, while crafting strengthens the fine motor skills needed for writing. It was a wonderful day filled with community connection, active learning, creativity and growing confidence.

We are so grateful to have been part of this special first Books on Board experience and hope to jump aboard for another adventure next week!
