In our Paua Room, celebrating birthdays is a special part of our shared rituals.
These familiar traditions give us time to come together, acknowledge each child’s growth and celebrate the milestones that shape their early years.
For each first birthday, we create a special cake using organic playdough, decorating it with flowers and herbs gathered from our own yard. We then gather together to sing Happy Birthday to our little celebrator.
It is a simple, familiar ritual that allows us to pause, share the moment and recognise this important milestone. Turning one is a significant step in a child’s journey, and it is a milestone we take pride in celebrating. Through these shared experiences, our pēpi begin to develop a sense of belonging within our Paua whānau.
As our tamariki approach their second birthday, another meaningful tradition takes place. They wear a korowai, a special cape that marks the beginning of their transition journey. This ritual acknowledges their growth and the exciting changes ahead as they prepare for the next stage of their learning journey.
By keeping these traditions alive, we create a sense of continuity and connection in our unhurried environment. Each celebration offers an opportunity to honour our tamariki, recognise their individual journeys and strengthen the relationships that make our learning community special.
In Paua, these rituals remind us that growing up is made up of many little milestones, each deserving of time, recognition and celebration.
