Community Helpers Visit – Strengthening Connections with Whānau and Community

As part of our internal evaluation focus on strengthening connections and building meaningful relationships with whānau and the wider community, our preschool children enjoyed a wonderful learning experience during the month of May.

We were privileged to welcome two special community helpers from our whānau—a paramedic and a police officer—who shared their knowledge, experiences, and important roles with the children. The visits provided authentic opportunities for children to learn about the people who help keep our communities safe, healthy, and supported.

The police officer talked about their role in helping others and maintaining safety, while the paramedic explained how they respond to emergencies and care for people when they are injured or unwell. The children were highly engaged, asking thoughtful questions and listening with great interest. They enjoyed exploring some of the uniforms and safety equipment, including high-visibility vests, which sparked imaginative play and discussions about helping others.

These experiences helped children make meaningful connections between their learning environment and the wider community. Inviting whānau to share their skills and professions enriched our curriculum and strengthened our partnerships with families. It also supported children in developing a sense of belonging and understanding of the diverse ways people contribute to their community.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our whānau members for sharing their time and expertise. Their involvement made this learning experience both memorable and valuable for our tamariki.
