As part of our Silverdale Matariki celebrations, our tamariki had the wonderful opportunity to visit Botanic Retirement Village to perform a special concert for the residents.
This was a meaningful experience that brought together different generations to celebrate the values of Matariki — reflection, connection, kindness and coming together. Our tamariki embraced the opportunity to share their learning with others, performing with enthusiasm, confidence and pride.
They enjoyed interacting with the residents, sharing smiles and conversation before and after the concert. It was wonderful to see the genuine connections that formed through music, laughter and shared experiences.
Connecting with our local community helps children develop a sense of belonging and understand that they are valued members of a wider community. These experiences encourage empathy, respect and confidence, while helping tamariki learn the importance of caring for others, building relationships and making positive contributions through simple acts of kindness.
Intergenerational experiences also provide valuable opportunities for tamariki to develop respect for older members of our community while creating lasting memories for everyone involved. These visits strengthen our children's understanding of whanaungatanga — building and nurturing relationships — and demonstrate how we all have an important role in caring for one another.
We are grateful to be part of such a caring community and look forward to many more opportunities to connect, learn and celebrate together.
Matariki reminds us to reflect on the past, celebrate the present and look forward with hope. We are proud that our tamariki could share this special occasion with members of our wider community, spreading joy, aroha and a true sense of togetherness.
