Recently, a group of our tamariki proudly represented our centre at the Early Years Cultural Festival held at Stanley Avenue School.

This event was particularly special as it was the first time the festival had been hosted since COVID, making it a wonderful opportunity for children, whānau, teachers, and the wider community to come together once again to celebrate culture, diversity, and belonging.

In the lead-up to the festival, our tamariki spent time practising songs and preparing for their performance. Through this process, they demonstrated perseverance, enthusiasm, and a growing sense of confidence. Performing in front of a large audience can be daunting, especially for young children, but our tamariki showed incredible courage and determination as they prepared for the big day.

The festival itself was a vibrant celebration of the many cultures that make up our community. There was a wonderful atmosphere throughout the day, with children from various early childhood centres and schools coming together to share songs, language, and cultural traditions. It was a fantastic opportunity for our tamariki to experience the richness of cultural diversity and to see how culture can be celebrated through music, performance, and connection with others.

One of the highlights of the day was catching up with many of our former tamariki who have now ventured off to school. It brought us so much joy to see familiar faces thriving in their new environments, confidently participating alongside their classmates and reconnecting with the friends and teachers who have been part of their learning journey. Moments like these remind us of the strong relationships that continue long after children leave our centre and begin their school adventures. When it was our turn to perform, our tamariki made us incredibly proud.

Standing in front of such a large crowd required a great deal of bravery, and each child rose to the occasion beautifully. Together, they confidently sang three cultural songs, sharing their voices with the audience and demonstrating the hard work they had put into learning and practising. It was wonderful to see their faces light up with pride as they performed, supported by cheering teachers, whānau, and peers. Throughout the experience, our tamariki displayed many valuable learning dispositions.

They showed courage by standing on stage, resilience when facing something new, and a strong sense of belonging as they performed together as a group. Events such as these provide meaningful opportunities for children to build confidence, develop self-esteem, and strengthen their understanding of cultural identity and respect for others. The festival was not only about performing, but also about creating lasting memories and celebrating community. The excitement on the bus ride, the laughter shared with friends, the reunion with children who have moved on to school, and the sense of accomplishment after performing all contributed to an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the organisers at Stanley Avenue School for bringing this wonderful event back to our community. After several years without the festival, it was fantastic to once again have the opportunity to participate in such a meaningful celebration. We are also grateful to our whānau for their ongoing support and encouragement. Most importantly, we would like to congratulate our amazing tamariki.

You were brave, respectful, enthusiastic, and proud performers. Watching you stand together and share your songs was a truly special moment, and we could not be prouder of the confidence and determination you showed.

The Early Years Cultural Festival was a day filled with connection, culture, learning, and fun, and it is a memory we will treasure for years to come. 🌟
