Every day, our learning environment provides tamariki with opportunities to explore, investigate, and create using open-ended resources.
Whether children are balancing gears, transporting materials, searching for insects with glasses, constructing imaginative scenes, or experimenting with loose parts, they are encouraged to follow their interests and test new ideas.
As tamariki play, they communicate their thinking, listen to different perspectives, negotiate roles, and work together to achieve shared goals. They learn that every idea has value and that challenges can be solved in different ways.
By adapting their plans and encouraging one another, children build resilience, confidence, empathy, and strong communication skills. These moments support creativity, critical thinking, and positive relationships with peers. Through these meaningful investigations, children engage in many of the 16 Areas of Play, including construction, science and discovery, imaginative play, loose parts play, nature play, literacy, mathematical thinking, fine and gross motor development, and social play.
They naturally count, compare, sort, observe, measure, build, and create while strengthening their understanding of the world around them. Guided by the principles of Te Whāriki, our kaiako intentionally create environments where ako, whakamana, and manaakitanga are woven into everyday experiences. Children learn with and from one another, make choices with confidence, and show kindness, respect, and encouragement as they explore together.
