In Ihutai Room, we value creating opportunities for tamariki to lead their own learning through choice, creativity and rangatiratanga.
Our Prep Room learning table is a dedicated space where tamariki can freely access a range of resources including pencils, crayons, paper, pre-writing books, profile books, scissors and craft materials.
We encourage tamariki to independently select the resources they need, explore their interests, and express their ideas through drawing, writing, colouring, cutting, and creating. Working alongside their hoa, they have opportunities to share ideas, collaborate on projects, and learn from one another in a supportive environment.
A key feature of this space is accessibility. Resources are thoughtfully organised so tamariki can confidently find what they need and return items to their rightful places when they are finished. This nurtures kaitiakitanga, helping children develop responsibility for their environment while building independence and self-management skills.
This approach aligns strongly with Mana Tangata | Contribution, where tamariki experience an environment that encourages cooperation and respect for others, and Mana Aotūroa | Exploration, where they gain confidence in using a variety of tools, materials, and strategies for learning. Through these meaningful experiences, tamariki are developing the confidence, capability, and learning dispositions that support their transition to kura and lifelong success as learners.
