A simple, hands-on activity can offer rich learning opportunities, especially when tamariki are encouraged to explore, problem-solve, and persist.
Our recent “Fishing game” is a great example of how purposeful play supports multiple areas of development.
Tamariki were invited to use chopsticks to “catch” small fish by guiding the sticks through tiny holes. This playful challenge required concentration, hand–eye coordination, and careful finger control. While fun, it also strengthened fine motor skills essential for writing, drawing, and everyday tasks.
Once the fish were caught, children sorted them into matching coloured bowls. This added a cognitive layer, encouraging them to recognise, compare, and classify colours. Sorting activities help build early mathematical thinking, as tamariki begin to notice patterns and differences in meaningful ways. Using chopsticks introduced an extra level of challenge and curiosity.
For many, this was a new tool, supporting pincer grip development and strengthening hand muscles needed for self-care skills like buttoning or using utensils. The activity also nurtured key learning dispositions. Tamariki showed persistence when the fish slipped, concentration as they refined their technique, and pride in their success.
Socially, they shared strategies, observed one another, and celebrated achievements together. This experience aligns with Te Whāriki Strand 4: Exploration (Mana Aotūroa), where children develop working theories and confidence in using a range of skills and strategies for problem-solving.
Through this engaging game, tamariki explored, experimented, and built competence—demonstrating how simple play can support meaningful learning across multiple areas while having fun.
