Matariki is a time for reflection, celebration, and new beginnings. At BestStart Waiata Shores, tamariki and whānau came together to share waiata, pūrākau, and joyful experiences, strengthening connections to te ao Māori and our community.

At BestStart Waiata Shores, we came together as a centre to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year. Matariki is a special time in Aotearoa when whānau and communities gather to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future.

Our tamariki enjoyed a variety of experiences that helped them connect with the meaning of Matariki. We began the day with waiata and movement, bringing everyone together with joy and energy. Tamariki showed great enthusiasm as they sang and danced alongside their teachers and friends.

We were also privileged to have a special storyteller visit us, sharing pūrākau (traditional stories) about Matariki and its significance. The tamariki listened with wonder, their eyes lighting up as they learned about the stars and the values of whānau, aroha, and new beginnings.

Through these experiences, our children gained a deeper understanding of te ao Māori, strengthening their sense of belonging and connection to our local culture.

Celebrating Matariki together is a wonderful way to honour the traditions of Aotearoa while nurturing values of respect, gratitude, and hope for the year ahead. At BestStart Waiata Shores, we are proud to celebrate Matariki with our tamariki and whānau, creating lasting memories together.
