Over the past few months, our tamariki have continued their journey as passionate kaitiaki of our māra kai, nurturing and caring for the seedlings that are growing into a thriving source of kai for our centre.

Together, we have planted broccoli, cauliflower, spring onions, strawberries, lettuce, passionfruit, corn, pumpkin, and watermelon, creating a rich and diverse garden filled with opportunities for learning and discovery.

Each Thursday, our tamariki gather around the garden to feed our growing crops special nutrients, carefully helping them flourish. On the other days, they take responsibility for watering the plants, weeding and ensuring they have everything they need to grow strong and healthy.

Through these regular acts of care, our tamariki are developing a deep understanding of kaitiakitanga, learning that their actions make a meaningful difference to the world around them. As they watch the seedlings transform into larger plants, the tamariki are experiencing the rewards that come from patience, perseverance, and teamwork.

There is great excitement as new leaves appear, flowers begin to bloom, and fruits and vegetables slowly take shape. These experiences help children build a connection with nature while fostering a sense of pride, responsibility, and belonging.

Our māra kai is more than just a garden. It is a living learning space where tamariki can see firsthand how caring for Papatūānuku provides us with nourishing kai. Soon, the fruits of their hard work will become part of our meal times, nourishing our bodies and strengthening our understanding of where food comes from.

We are incredibly proud of the dedication our tamariki have shown as kaitiaki and look forward to sharing in the harvest together.
