Small Steps Towards Big School

Our Tāne Mahuta tamariki have been enjoying a range of exciting excursions and visits to local schools, providing meaningful opportunities to explore, discover, and grow beyond the familiar environment of our centre.

These experiences are an important part of supporting our tamariki as they prepare for the transition to school, helping them become comfortable and confident in new places and situations. During each visit, tamariki have the opportunity to experience school environments, observe routines, meet new people, and engage with spaces that may become familiar to them in the future.

Being able to explore these experiences alongside their friends and kaiako provides a sense of security while encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones. Through these small but meaningful experiences, tamariki are developing greater independence, confidence, and resilience as they learn to navigate unfamiliar environments, communicate with others, and try new things.

They are also building important skills such as listening, following instructions, taking turns, problem-solving, and managing their emotions in different settings. Most importantly, these visits allow tamariki to see themselves as capable and confident learners who are ready to take on new challenges.

We are proud to see their confidence grow with every visit as they become more curious, independent, and excited about what lies ahead. Each excursion is a small step towards a big milestone, helping our tamariki build the confidence and skills they need for a positive transition to school.
