We embarked on an exciting project to help encourage and grow our tamariki’s (children's) understanding of sustainability, respect for our environment and pride and knowledge of our local Wellington community.

We took a group of eight four-year-olds and two teachers every Wednesday morning for 8 weeks to investigate and gather the data we found at Cobblestone Park.

The tamariki wore gloves and used tongs to protect themselves as we looked at the types of rubbish found in the park, we looked at who used the park and what for. We also make sure we allowed the opportunity to mix the learning opportunities up for the tamariki to have some physical play together.

The project allowed our older tamariki the chance to expand their knowledge and use of technology as the tamariki took their own digital documentation. We collated our data of rubbish and recycling using computers with the tamariki to visually see and track what we find. The tamariki gained confidence to ask people, if there was a recycling bin would they use it?  This is something the tamariki want to feedback to the City council.

This project supported our centre philosophy and vision as researchers and urban explorers. The tamariki were very proud of their contribution in cleaning up the park and feedback to their parents/whanau that they helped make it a safe and clean park and invited their families to help. The tamariki had great Mana in their contribution to the removal of rubbish and recycling at the park. It is a project that we have decided to continue to do annually as there were so many learning outcomes.
